Design
The Dell 1320c’s design is basic and straightforward, befitting its small-office role. The dark gray printer sits 15.6 inches wide, 16.6 inches deep, and 14.8 inches tall, and weighs a bit less than 40 pounds. The control panel is limited to two buttons (cancel and continue) and a graphic representation of the printer with LEDs that light up to indicate where a problem is occurring. For example, the paper tray area icon lights up when the tray is open, and the four toner icons light up if toner is running low–useful since the printer lacks a text LCD.

The main paper tray holds 250 sheets of regular paper, and a single-sheet manual feed slot resides on the front of the paper tray. The input capacity is not expandable on this model. The top-mounted output bin holds up to 150 sheets.

The four toner cartridges are hidden behind a panel on the right side of the printer. The cartridges for this unit are small and lightweight. Pulling them out, however, causes toner to dust your desktop–you’ve been forewarned. Each cartridge comes in two capacities: 1,000 prints and 2,000 prints. The small black costs $45, and the small color cartridges cost $59 each. The larger versions of each cost $60 and $79, respectively. Using the larger cartridges for best value, we calculate that a black-only print costs about 3 cents and a full color page costs about 15 cents. Both costs are reasonable, though slightly higher than those for the Oki C5500n. The monthly duty cycle is 35,000 prints.

Features
The Dell 1320c has the basic features you’d expect from a basic color laser printer. The base model connects via USB only, but you can add on a network adapter for $50. It ships with a 333MHz processor and 64MB of nonexpandable memory. There’s no duplexer unit available for the 1320c, but the printer’s driver will assist you with a manual duplex print job. Likewise, the driver can help you shrink or enlarge a print, create a poster or booklet print, and make N-up prints.

The Samsung ML-1665 mono laser printer certainly is small, Samsung say it’s the worlds smallest black-and-white laser printer. It’s all-black design is not the most exciting, it’s quite uninteresting but is quite discrete sitting on the edge of my desk as I type. The black plastic may not suit everyone’s setup but it’s inoffensive and I guess no one wants a printer to be too exciting!

Of the printers that we’ve had in to review lately the Samsung ML-1665 was by far the easiest to set up. All you have to do is take it out of the box, plug it in and install the printer drivers on your computer.  The toner cartridge comes pre-installed in the printer so there’s no need to mess about with this the first time you use the printer. It is however, just as with almost any printer you buy, a lower capacity ‘starter’ cartridge offering about 700 pages.

Cartridges drop in really easily and you can find 1500 page capacity replacement from it247.com for only £42.70 which means that the per-page print cost is around 2.8 pence. This is good considering this printer is not designed for high-volume printing.

The CD-rom that comes with the printer even has a Windows 7 driver so you wont have to go searching online for the latest versions to get up and running. In fact we were able to get set up and the first prints out of the printer in literally 5 minutes. Big thumbs-up there!

One final note on the setup front. Make sure you have a USB cable to hand so that you can connect to your Mac or PC. I know they are not expensive but why do printers never have these included?

The front mounted paper-tray is a flip-out type tray and holds 150 sheets. Not a massive capacity and perhaps will be annoying for office use to have to keep loading but fine I’m sure for home use. The only thing about this is that you have to fold open and install paper and then remove paper to close anytime you what to leave the printer in a ‘tidy’ state.

Don’t worry if you forget to open the top output tray though, it wont lead to paper-jams or crumpled printouts. There is a gap at the front that allows printed pages to exit unhindered but it does lead to a pile of printed paper on the desk or the floor.

You might expect this small and inexpensive ML-1665 to be slow and clunky but that could not be further from the truth. In actual fact the ML-1665 is one of the quietest we’ve had on test. When in stand-by it’s totally silent and never cycles as some other printers will do periodically.

In terms of speed Samsung claim that the ML-1665 is capable of 16 pages per minute. Manufacturers often claim faster speeds than you’ll get in reality it seems that Samsung have been more accurate with their claims. We sent a large plain-test document to the printer and the first page was out in under 10 seconds and the rest followed quickly delivering an overall print speed of around 15 pages per minute. Even adding complex images to the documents had little impact on speed still turning out at a rate of 12 pages per minute. Impressive.

Print quality of this little Samsung is excellent. To compare the output I printed a test page from my expensive HP LaserJet and the same page with the same settings from the ML-1665. To me the prints are impossible to tell apart I would not be able to call which one was which in a blind test. Even printing grey-scale photos offered great results and a full page photo came out in about 11 seconds.

I notice some other reviewers stated that they noticed some ghosting with the print output when running in draft mode but I have not had such issues with the unit we have on test.

The ML-1665 may not have many advanced features but it’s been stripped to the minimum to reach a price point. There is one handy little feature though, a print screen button. Pushing the button on the printer does exactly what it says on the tin and within a few seconds you’ll have a printed copy of exactly what was displayed on the monitor. I’ve never seen this feature before but I can see it being quite useful.

First, it performs very nicely as a network color laser printer. It uses four toner cartridges (black, yellow, cyan, & magenta) that are easily accessed via a simple sliding drawer at the front of the unit. The toner cartridges are available in standard-capacity and high-capacity. While it is a little disappointing that the machine ships with the standard-capacity cartridges, this seems to be the ‘norm’ in the printer industry. However, I recommend purchasing the high-capacity cartridges when it is time to replenish your supplies, since they are a better value.

The machine comes with a 250-sheet standard paper tray as well as a 50-sheet “Multi-purpose” paper tray that folds down from the front of the unit. Many printers that we have used in the past also had one of these “multi-purpose”-type trays, but they usually amounted to nothing more than a single sheet manual feeder or an envelope feeder; we like the fact that this one holds 50 sheets and can actually be used as a second paper tray. We also purchased the optional 500-sheet paper tray so that we can have plain paper, letterhead, and labels loaded at the same time. The unit can use legal size paper in addition to letter size.

We really love the built-in duplex feature, and it is one of the main reasons that we purchased this model, as it saves us a ton on paper costs. We found that the prices of machines with built-in duplex capabilities (especially color models) were typically substantially higher than machines without duplex, and, initially, we didn’t think we could afford a color laser with duplex. However, the 9045CDN was surprisingly within our budget.

As for network printing, this machine has very robust network support. It supports TCP/IP v4 as well as TCP/IP v6, which means its network capabilities should be about as future-proof as possible. The 9045CDN supports peer-to-peer type networks as well as server-based networks, and the included software and setup guide make it very easy to setup the unit to work with either type of network. The machine includes drivers for Windows 2000, Windows XP (32-bit & 64-bit), Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 (32-bit & 64-bit), and Mac OS X 10.2.4 (or greater.)

Second, this machine not only scans, but it is actually a network scanner. We looked at several other network printers that had scanning capabilities, but most of them could only scan to a single computer through a USB cable – their network capabilities were limited to printing only. However, the 9045CDN can scan directly to any computer that is attached to our network! In addition, it can scan directly to an FTP server on the network or on the Internet. The automatic document feeder is very handy and this machine will even perform duplex scanning and copying! The scanner glass is large enough for legal size paper; however, the automatic feeder only supports up to letter size paper, so legal size documents must be scanned or copied one at a time.

Beyond network printing and scanning, the 9045CDN, of course, has the obligatory USB port on the rear so that you can attach the machine directly to a single computer rather than to a network. There are also several nice features that allow you to use the machine without even having to boot up any computers. For instance, you can print directly from or scan directly to a USB memory key (i.e. flash drive, etc.); just plug your flash drive into the USB port on the front of the machine, and print your documents and pictures that are stored on the flash drive. You can also attach a PictBridge compatible camera to the machine and print your photos without a computer. The machine also works great as a standalone color copier.

We were able to replace two non-network monochrome laser printers, a color inkjet multifunction printer/scanner, and a copier with one 9045CDN. For most of our printing/copying we use the 9045CDN in black and white mode, but when we need color it is there, and it is substantially less expensive per page to print in color than the color inkjet printer that this unit replaced. We are very pleased with this unit.
